Satanism and Chaos

One conclusion I’ve come to lately is that Satanism (and I mean in general, as a philosophy, not just strictly Church of Satan) and the concept of Chaos (as I see it) are very related. And the main reason I think this is the the symbol of the Church of Satan, known as the Sigil of Baphomet, as you can see below.

As you can see, on each of the five points of the pentagram, you find Hebraic letters. Starting from the left ear point and ending at the mouth, each character spells out “לִוְיָתָן”, which spells out Leviathan. In the Tanakh and the Old Testament, Leviathan was a symbol of primal chaos, to be quashed by “God”, who is thus presented as a symbol of Order, and order over chaos. Another link to Chaos is the Ouroboros (the serpent biting its own tail in a circle), which sometimes appears on the pentagram, though not usually alongside the Hebrew characters. It refers to the serpent, Leviathan, and Tiamat, thus the Dragon of the Abyss, thus primal chaos.

It’s said that it’s because the Sigil is designed to be a confluence of several cultures’ approach to embodying what we would commonly refer to as Satan or something like it. In other words, an adversarial entity who acts against “God” (or the closest thing to it), and often represents chaos, usually by nature of their opposition to the supreme god and his order. But I think the pentagram also hints at a drawing from some kind of force. The force in question being Chaos, or the pure power or potential from which all else arises, which anyone leaning towards the Left Hand Path may draw from.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Satanists draw from Chaos in some way, be it symbolically or not. It would certainly make Satanism even more interesting than I thought possible.
