My thoughts on the new Spiritual Satanism

There’s a new development here in the sphere of us WordPress Satanists, that is Satanists are currently active and are part of a blogosphere here on WordPress. My friend Summer Thunder has started a new group for what he refers to as Spiritual Satanism.

When you research the term Spiritual Satanism on the Internet, the term is typically described interchangeably with theistic Satanism, if not simply seen as another name for theistic Satanism. However, the term also has its associations with a group known as Joy of Satan.

I used to be very active on Yahoo Answers when I was a teenager, and often times when I talked about religion and Satanism I would come across people from Joy of Satan, usually shills who posted the same wall of bullshit about how Satanism was actually sun worship and how Satan was the creator deity Enki among various other nonsense. They are a neo-Nazi cult that seems to have started years ago with a woman named Andrea Herrington (aka Maxine Dietrich). Although they have the trappings of theistic Satanism, much of their philosophy is at odds with Satanism and certainly contradicts the basic ethos behind Satanism. In Satanism, the individual is the object of focus and Satan is a device, a symbol, a guiding idea to which the individual may relate, and the individual is the master. In Joy of Satan however, there is a certain emphasis on the “glory” of your race. Specifically, the race of the “Gentiles”, typically meaning either white or Aryan (although I have heard there are a few non-white members of the group), as well as the perceived “evil” of the Jews, which is also bound up with their militant opposition to Judaism and Christianity, and the individual’s relationship with Satan (who is erroneously interchanged with the deity Enki).

But there is another Satanist out there who uses the term Spiritual Satanism to describe her beliefs. Her name is Venus Satanas, a self-described witch who has written essays on the subject of Satanism from an independent perspective. For her, the term Spiritual Satanism entails a form of Satanism that is completely self-directed, centering on your relationship between you and the concept of Satan, in terms of a spiritual form or doctrine free of the constraints of religious dogma and the boundaries of group-based ideology (as personified by organizations such as the Church of Satan). You bow not to the ruler of heaven, nor supplicate Satan as the lord of hell. Satan is a being, or a force, the individual aligns with on his/her own terms. She refers to Satan as a god in some of her postings, so I am inclined to think she is a theistic Satanist who plays by her own rules. To be a Spiritual Satanist, for Venus Satanas, is essentially to be an independent Satanist, not affiliated with any organizations that would limit the thinking of the individual Satanist, but it is from something of a spiritualistic perspective. In this sense, it is her way of reconciling spiritualism with Satanism, and for that I suppose it’s no surprise other Satanists would single her out as merely a “self-styled” Satanist.

Now, I for one welcome any attempts from Satanists to appropriate the term Spiritual Satanism in any capacity that is outside the Joy of Satan. I would be interested in the term Spiritual Satanism having its own sort of identity separate from theistic Satanism, though I suspect it will be treated as a subset of theistic Satanism. At any rate, I think it’s good if Satanists take the term as their own as they wanted to do so and distinguish themselves from Joy of Satan.

Summer Thunder has a Facebook group for any Satanists who either want to be Spiritual Satanists, already consider themselves Spiritual Satanists (hopefully not the JoS types I mentioned earlier), or are simply fascinated by the concept. The group is a UK-focused group called Spiritual Satanists of the UK, and anyone who’s interested can join if they want.

  1. Venus Satanas has always been to me the principle philosopher of Spiritual Satanism. The Joy of Satan are a type of kindergartan Satanism attractive to noobs, students and teens, who often if they stay with Satanism finally mature to other forms of LHP, especially Luciferianism.

    • This might be something I have to read about further, but how come Luciferianism is considered an either agnostic or pantheistic form of Satanism. As I understand it, Luciferianism seems to be it’s own movement that kind of branches from modern Satanism, but with clear differences.

      • The theistic focus of Joy of Satan makes Luciferianism ideal. For those of JOS the subtle differences between Luciferianism and Satanism is not understood by them.

  2. “The enemy was said to be Satan, the evil one who would claim the souls of any who did not offer absolute obedience to the church. For this scheme of threat and trepidation to succeed, it was imperative for people to believe that the diabolical Satan had existed from the beginning of time, and there was no earlier story with which he could be associated than that of Adam and Eve. The only problem was that Genesis made no mention whatever of Satan, but there was, of course the inherit account of Eve and the wise serpent. The serpent lord was Enki, but in parts of Chaldea he had been called Shaitan, and so it was determined that the story could be rewritten to suit the desired purpose.” – Excerpt from “Genesis of the Grail Kings” by Laurence Gardner

The name “Shaitan” or “Sheitan” derives from the Chaldean term “Teitan” which corresponds to the serpent who taught humanity. In the Chaldean language the “sh” or “s” often transforms into “t” or vise versa therefore the name “Teitan” is “Sheitan” (Shaitan) and “Seitan” (Saitan) which happens to be another alternative spelling for “Satan” in other languages. Furthermore, the Yazidi emissaries from India resided in Mesopotamia and played a role in fledgling the civilization. They acknowledged Enki as the Sumerian manifestation of Melek Taus, who is also known as “Shaitan” – who to them, is the divine being that the Abrahamic religions have later on denoted as the devil or an evil being. The origins of the Yazidis has been shown to go back farther than Judaism, Islam and Christianity. It’s rather interesting that the very name of the “devil” existed where they have resided long before those three plagues were unleashed onto mankind.

One does not have to be part of the “Joy of Satan” organization to acknowledge the fact that Satan originates from the Sumerian god Enki. They’re not being “erroneously interchanged.” The Bible, specifically the Book of Genesis, is just a recast of one of the earliest surviving works of literature: The Epic of Gilgamesh. Those who have taken the time to study the ancient myths of ancient Mesopotamia will recognize that Satan’s character is equal to that of Enki : the Bringer of Knowledge, the Serpent of Eden, the Dragon, the Goat, the Rebel, etc. This has even been pointed out by scholars.

    • “Satan comes from Teitan”

The name Satan rather clearly originates in Hebrew, from a word literally meaning “adversary”. I’ve run a search on Teitan and there are very few reliable sources (mostly Christian as a matter of fact). Shaitan is simply an Arabic variant on Satan.

“Enki and Satan are not irreneously interchanged”

Yes they are. There is no historical link between Enki and Satan. If you look at the historical myths surrounding Enki, you’ll find that, if anything, Enki is closer to Yahweh than Satan. For from being the rebel, Enki was the originator of the principle of law and order in the cosmos. If this connection between Enki and Satan is something so accepted by scholars then I have yet to see the scholars. He has nothing to do with Melek Taus either, and there is no evidence for his connection. If anything, a cursory search would suggest that Yazidism, the religion of Melek Taus, originated later than the Sumerian religion.

I’m aware that “Shaitan” is the Arabic variant of “Satan” but it’s been shown that the name goes back a bit further and one example is from the excerpt I quoted from a prominent author and speaker in the alternative history, who actually took the time to partake in archaeological research which other scholars have found worthy. Christians tend to add on their conspiracies and propagate it like wildfire, so there’s going to be confusion and of course their crap is going to flood the internet.

Dozens of people say otherwise about there being a connection between Enki and Yahweh. Nor do all scholars agree with such a notion. It was Enki, the serpent, who told Adam and Eve to eat the fruit. Yahweh told them not to and cursed the serpent. Enki was against the flood, which in the Bible, was sent by Yahweh. In the Sumerian version of “Sodom and Gomorrah” Enki was also against the slaughter of the masses, which in the Bible, was caused by none other than Yahweh himself. It goes on.

Many believe that Ea (Enki) is equivalent to the Canannite god Yah, who some believe to be Yahweh. The problem is that Ea along with his Egyptian counterpart (Ptah) is better known as “Heyan” aka “Chousor” or “Kothar-wa-Khasis” to the Canaanites and he was enemies with Yah (Yahweh?) and helped Ba’al defeat him, rather than being an equivalent of him.

But overall Yahweh seems to have parallels with several Mesopotamian gods: Enki, Enlil, Anu, Marduk, etc– because the Bible is nothing more than a recast of the original archives and his character is built upon numerous of deities that predate him, kind of like how Jesus is.

Another connection Enki has with Satan is through the name “Samael” which is given to Satan in the Talmud. However, it’s also an Akkadian epithet name given to Enki when he was designated as the “Lord of Sama” in Northern Mesopotamia. Furthermore, Enki also has parallels with the Roman Sun god Saturn, who’s name is agreed to be interchangeable with Satan.

It wasn’t Satan in the Bible who originated the principle of law and order in the cosmos, therefore ignore all the other connections?

        — Keep looking because their tradition goes back to Mesopotamia. Many Yazidi sources are strong on the idea that Enki is the Sumerian manifestation of Melek Taus, whom they associate with several gods throughout the ancient world.
