My brother and I were arguing about animal nature, and he describes Man as “the better animal” because we are capable of thinking and because of our civilization and technology. In reality, we are not better or superior to any animal, not even because of evolution. Evolution does not work that way.
Man is only “better” in the sense that it is better equipped to adapt to its surroundings and more able to survive and pass on its genetic legacy, and even then we are no different to any other animal, just that we are thinking animal.
We like to think ourselves as being on top of the food chain, with no natural predators, but we’re not really at the top of anything, and we have only gotten so far because we used our intellect. It is not our divine right. Our layer of civilization and technology is pretty much the only thing shielding us from getting attacked and devoured by the rest of the animal kingdom, and even then, even within our layer of civilization, the rest of the animal kingdom has its ways of getting to us. Not to mention Nature always has its ways of reminding us that we are not the rulers of the world.
Honestly, I think mankind has just been using the idea of Man as the superior creature as a way of still basically separating themselves from the rest of the animal kingdom, to deny that we are basically not very different to the rest of the animal kingdom.
